1966 Pontiac GTO 2-Door Hardtop Sport Coupe powered by a 7.5L 455cui V8 GM Oldsmobile big block engine and driven by a 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission.
The Pontiac GTO was manufactured by American automobile manufacturer Pontiac from 1964 through to 1974, and it became a separate model (model number 242) in 1966, instead of being an “option package” on the Tempest LeMans. The entire GM “A” body intermediate line was restyled that year, gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a ‘Coke-Bottle’ look and a slightly tunneled backlight. The tail light featured a louvered cover and was only seen on the GTO.
These Classic GTO’s are getting tough to find in this condition, especially original one’s that have not been converted from a Lemans. This is a true GTO with the first 3 digits of the VIN showing it’s ‘242’ heritage, and was built in GM’s Fremont California plant and finished in Candlelight Cream. This here is a very solid car and is ready to drive and enjoy immediately! Everyone knows these GTO’s and this one is sure to strike up conversations everywhere you go.
The body is very well presented, with some minor bumps and bruises to be seen, but it still looks good for an older paint job, and there is no bubbling to be seen in the common areas, and all the panels line up well. The interior features front bucket sets with a gearshift console, all the gauges work including the factory tacho, plus an oil pressure gauge is mounted below with an all matching woodgrain dash inlay. The seats are in good shape and are quite comfortable, the carpet and headliner is presentable and there are no cracks in the dash pad. The factory style radio remains in place, but a larger system has been installed in the trunk. Some work will be needed to get the sound system functioning properly.
The engine & drivetrain is a great combination with a lot of recent work performed. The engine is an Oldsmobile 455cui V8 big block and has quite the bit more performance over the stock 389, in fact, about 30+ HP more and about 80 lb/ft of torque. Backed behind that is a TH400 transmission to a 10 bolt rear end. A “Be Cool” aluminum radiator with dual electric fans have been added for better cooling and an Edelbrock intake/carb has been added to the engine, along with plenty of chrome to clean the engine bay up. A newer brake booster and master cylinder are seen as well as an all new front disc brake setup. Also a newer AGR steering box with all new front end steering components can be seen. Hotchkis front & rear sway bars have been added for extra stability. Really, the drive quality of this GTO is great and you wont be disappointed.
Finally the chassis is also in great shape and is very solid. No rust or damage is seen, the floors & trunk pans look great. This GTO wears a nice set of Centerline polished alloy 17″ rims, with Toyo Proxes 225/45 front & 275/40 rear tyres, all with good tread remaining.
