1980 Pontiac Firebird ‘Trans Am’ 2-door Fastback Coupe powered by a 6.6L 400cui V8 GM Pontiac small block engine and driven by a THM350 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission.
Rarely has one car so dominated the American public’s awareness: in the second half of the 70’s, the Trans Am became the icon of the American performance car, for better or for worse. Americans were not at all ready to embrace a future of little four-banger Shetland-pony cars, and so it was that Firebird and TA sales soared during this period, and hit a phenomenal peak in 1979. However, 1980 saw the biggest engine changes for the Trans Am, the ever-increasing emissions restrictions had led Pontiac to drop all of its large-displacement engines, and the 301cui then became the standard engine on offer.
In this Trans Am the original 301cui engine has been replaced with an earlier GM Pontiac 400cui V8 small block featuring a mild cam, and the automatic transmission has been recently rebuilt.
This is a sweet driving car with loads of torque, and sees a very clean solid body with no rust. The paint is in excellent condition, and the interior has new upholstery, carpet & headliner.
