1969 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible powered by a 6.6L 400cui V8 GM Pontiac small block engine matched to a THM400 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission and driven through a 10-bolt rear differential.
Pontiac’s early dealer literature was rather blunt in the manner in which the GM division flaunted their 1969 Firebird 400. “Big Daddy!” Not Peppy Pony or Frisky Firebird, but Big Daddy. And they had good reason for choosing Big Daddy, as the carefully positioned 400 badges were more than just a fancy model call-out. Pontiac engineers for 1969 began with the restyled unit-body Firebird hardtop or convertible, which included a redesigned chrome split grille fascia; quad headlamps surrounded by body-colored Endura bezels; chiseled body lines and rear-facing faux front fender ducts. From there, the 400 package, sold under option code 345, specified the installation of Redline wide oval tires and a refined hood featuring two low-profile faux hood scoops adorned with the aforementioned 400 badges. Under that sporting skin was a 400cui V8, listed as having a 4.12 x 3.75-inch bore and stroke with a 10.75:1 compression ratio. Under the basic Firebird 400 banner, the standard Rochester four-barrel carbureted beast was rated for 330hp at 4,800 rpm and 430lbs.ft. of torque with a dual exhaust.
This car was produced in the last week of October 1969 in GM’s Pontiac plant in Lordstown, Ohio as a Firebird 400 convertible and was fitted with a Pontiac W66 6.6L 400cui 4-bbl 330hp V8 small block engine, matched with a THM400 3-spd automatic transmission and paired to a 10-bolt rear differential with 3.08:1 gears. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Midnight Green with Green interior trim and front bucket seats.
This car was residing in Houston, Texas before being imported here in late 2021. The car has seen a refurbish some years ago, which involved a re-paint in Matador Red, and the upholstery, trim and convertible top changed to Black.
Overall this is a very nice car which has been tastefully restored, and is a standout wherever it goes. The paint shows very nicely with some minor stone chips here & there and some minor areas of surface bubble rust showing. All chrome, brightwork and weather stripping are in excellent condition. The convertible top still shows like new, however it does show a small tear on the passenger side, which is not causing any leaks. The car starts, runs, drives and stops as it should and is a blast to drive. This ‘400’ convertible model sees a host of muscle features as standard which include 10.75:1 compression, power steering, power assisted front disc brakes, centre-console, dual exhaust and more.
Absolutely beautiful, this car is a great weekend cruiser, and one for the car show warrior!!
