1968 Mercury Park Lane 2-door Convertible powered by a 6.4L 390cui-4V 315hp V8 Ford FE-Series 390 engine and driven by a Ford C6 ‘Merc-O-Matic’ 3-speed column automatic transmission.
Drawing styling cues from the suicide door Lincolns, the Mercury Park Lane was a wonderful combination of Lincoln-like luxury and good old fashioned horsepower. This big Merc cruises with a FE-series 390 cubic inch V8 that provides the kind of effortless thrust you demand in your luxury ragtop, and it looks pretty original under there, with corporate blue paint on the engine itself and original decals up top. It’s driven by a C6 3-speed ‘Merc-O-Matic’ automatic transmission and a set of 2.75 gears in the 9-inch differential out back, so it just loafs along effortlessly on the highway. This car went into production on the 22nd August 1968 in Ford’s St Louis, Missouri plant after being ordered for delivery into the Seattle, Washington DSO where it has lived all of it’s life.
This Park lane is an excellent driver and has many of the options anyone could desire for the era. The exterior is painted in Nugget Gold Metallic, the body is fairly straight although their is evidence of prior work that has been done, mostly seen to the right rear quarter panel. These areas have been painted with a similar gold, but not a good match as you can see in the pictures. The rest of the body looks very good with no bubbles or signs of rust. The white Power Top looks great and works like it should with a matching gold top boot when the top is in it’s lowered position.
The interior is complete and everything seems to work including the power windows, heater and AM radio. The A/C is currently non-operational but looks to be complete, so it will need a full service & re-gas. The interior is factory original Lt Nugget Gold vinyl, however the seats do show some tears but they are still comfortable and quite usable. Everything on this car is original and kept in good shape for it’s age besides some general wear & tear. This car features power steering and power disc brakes, which make it a breeze to control down the road and to stop quickly. The chassis also looks great, with no signs of rust and overall it is very solid.
It is hard to find a solid convertible classic car, and the bonus with this Park Lane is that it is ready to cruise today, and work on while you have some spare time.
