1968 Ford Torino GT 2-dr Fastback sport coupe powered by a 6.4L 390cui-2v V8 Ford ‘FE-series’ big block engine and matched to a C6 3-speed ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ console-shift automatic transmission and driven through a conventional rear differential with 2.75:1 gearing.
This car was produced on the 17th May 1968 in Ford’s Atlanta, Georgia plant as a Torino GT 2-dr Fastback coupe and was fitted with an ‘Y-Code’ 390cui-2v V8 2-bbl big block engine. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Dark Blue Metallic paint and trimmed with Light Blue vinyl interior with front bucket seats and a centre console. It was matched with a C6 3-spd ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ automatic transmission paired to a conventional rear differential with 2.75:1 gearing and delivered to the Indianapolis, Indiana district sales office. Mahan Ford Sales of Columbus, Indiana was the selling dealer, who sold this car to its original owner on the 31st May 1968 in Hoquiam, Washington state; and the car has spent all its fifty-five (55) years of life in the Pacific North-West of the US.
This ’68 Torino GT is definitely a looker!! Colloquially called ‘Presidential Blue’, this is a super classy Ford paint colour that really shows off the lines on this car. Receipt documentation shows that this car was repainted way back in August 1978, and the car still presents well, but the paint is now showing its age. All but the most astute would call this finish as the original paint. The chrome & bright trim are also quite nice, a testament to the care this car received over its life. There is no visible rust or rust repair on the car.
Inside the interior is pretty much the factory original setup, and even the carpet is still the factory original. There is obvious wear, but it is still quite impressive. The upholstery is soft & supple, plating on the dash bezels looks new, gauge faces are clean & corrosion free.
Under the bonnet, the original ‘numbers matching’ 390 V8 appears to have never been removed from its mounts. It fires up easily and runs quite well. The C6 automatic goes into gear quickly and shifts properly.
This car comes with a plethora of documentation, which truly shows a treasure trove of history on the car. The original window sticker, the tab for the warranty card, owner’s manual, service records from the selling dealer and other Ford garages, tyre receipts, exhaust receipts and the normal service records from the local Gordon’s garage. Piece these all together and you can see where the car was mileage wise through the years and what parts needed attention. It’s a rare glimpse into this car’s history.
So, there you have it, not a show car but simply a very good honest example of this era of the Torino GT model, that has been cared for and maintained during its life.
