1957 Ford Thunderbird 2-dr Convertible powered by a 5.1L 312cui ‘Y-block’ OHV V8 Ford small block engine and driven by a 3-spd ‘Ford-O-Matic’ floor-shift automatic transmission.
The now legendary Ford Thunderbird was introduced to the U.S. market in 1955 as a response by Ford to the Chevy Corvette, which had come out two years prior to capture the Sports car market. In 1953, with Ford trying to respond swiftly to the Corvette’s release, the Thunderbird underwent rapid development, going from an initial concept to a first prototype within the space of a year. The vehicle hit the market toward the end of 1954 as a 1955 model with success beyond Ford’s wildest expectations.
For 1957 some major styling changes took place on the Thunderbird from its predecessors. Inside, the instrument panel was redesigned with clustered dials plus new designs to the all-vinyl upholstery and trim combinations. Outside the spare tyre went back into the trunk, and the standard top for the ’57 Thunderbird, made of fiberglass, was removable and had stylish port windows (also available without port windows). A manually operated soft top was also an option but at an extra cost. Tops were available in black, blue, tan or white and comfort-sealed against the weather. The rear boasted rear fins which were growing in populartity by automakers. The Thunderbird’s optional engine choice for 1957 contained a new 312cui OHV V8.
This is a lovely 1st Gen Thunderbird which has been the same family owned in central California for over 25 years. It has a one-time repaint in the rare factory colour of Thunderbird Bronze with a Colonial White Hard Top and White Vinyl Soft Top. The upholstery has been refurbished in the correct factory color of Copper.
This ‘Baby-Bird’ is a fully factory optioned car featuring the ‘D-code’ 312cui 245hp V8 engine matched to a 3-spd automatic transmission, radial white wall tyres on stock 14″ wheels with full wheel covers, power steering, power assisted brakes, power seat, power windows, Town/County AM radio and after-market air conditioning!
A lovely Thunderbird that has been well maintained and presents with an older restoration that is in excellent driving condition.
