1968 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback powered by a 4.9L ‘J-Code’ 302cui-4v V8 Ford Windsor small block engine and driven by a C4 3-spd floor-shift automatic transmission.
This Fastback was built in Ford’s San Jose, Northern California plant on the 8th September 1967 and featured Sunlit Gold paint matched to standard Black vinyl upholstery. It was powered by a 4.9L ‘J-Code’ 302cui-4v High Compression V8 Windsor engine, matched with a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and paired to a 3.00:1 conventional rear differential. It was delivered and sold into the Seattle, Washington DSO and has spent all it’s life on the pacific north-west coast of the US.
The paint isn’t perfect but the car presents well, having had a repaint some time ago. There is some of the typical corner bubbling, scratches and dents, but the body is very solid and doesn’t show any obvious signs of prior collision. The panels line up well and the car just looks good. Chrome and glass are all in good order as well. The trunk lid has the typical fastback lower rust but a nice original trunk lid that has been sandblasted is included. The floors do have some localized rust in the driver rear & passenger front corners; both are easily repairable as there is no torque box or frame rail involvement. The frame rails and torque boxes are very nice on this car.
Inside it appears the original interior is still in place. The seats have seam separations but the frames & buns still look good. The instrument bezels are all aged, but new units are easily available, inexpensive and relatively easy to install. The interior in this car could easily be enjoyed as is or restored without spending a king’s ransom.
Under the hood, the original numbers matching engine is still in place and it does runs excellent. This engine is the desirable 230hp ‘J’ code high compression 302. It fires up easily, sounds great and out on the road it has plenty of power. The C4 automatic transmission shifts nicely as well.
So there we have it, a very good driving Fastback that does need some cosmetic restoration attention to bring it back to it’s former glory.
