1966 Ford Mustang 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a ‘A-Code’ 4.7L 289cui-4v V8 Ford Windsor small block engine matched to a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission and driven through an 8″ limited-slip rear differential with 3.00:1 axle ratio.
This car was built in Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan plant on the 28th April 1966 and was painted Candy Apple Red and featured standard Black vinyl interior. It was produced as an A-code 289cui-4v V8 Windsor engined car, matched to a 4-speed manual transmission and driven by an 8″ limited-slip 3.00:1 rear differential. This ’66 Coupe was delivered to the Salt Lake City, Utah DSO where it was sold, and it has been a resident most of its life in the drier northern states district of Montana, Idaho and Utah.
This ’66 was built with all the GT Options but without the fluff of the stripes, badging, fog lights & dual exhaust exit valance. This one is quite rare in that respect and it would be a nice restoration project as it would be very unique with those original options. Currently it is decked out with Shelby side & hood scoops which could be another fun way to go. The body is quite solid and has been coated in a Matte Black sealer while you decide which way to go, and it does look pretty cool the way it is.
This coupe was originally delivered to the Salt Lake City Utah ordering district which took care of Utah, Montana and Idaho states, which are basically dry & salt free roads. The floors still wear much of their original red oxide paint with the exception of the passenger pan which has been nicely replaced with a reproduction pan front to back. The factory frame rails are still wearing their original black paint which is easily exposed by the flaking original undercoating. Just a bit of cleaning would make a huge difference under this car. The quarters appear to be the originals too. The previous owner had designs of a repaint but never completed the project, so after some work he resealed the car in Hot Rod Black sealer for a nice look and to keep it solid for the next owner. There are sanding marks and the like still visible on close inspection; and as such you would call this one a 20 footer.
Inside the interior is a mix of old & new. The seats show wear, but the frames & foam are solid. New carpet has been installed as well as a new dash pad. Obviously, there are projects on the inside, but this one could easily serve as it is for a fun driver or an entry level car for the new enthusiast.
Under the bonnet the 289 runs excellent. It has been upgraded with an aluminum intake manifold and long tube headers. It fires up easily and sounds nice. There is a small exhaust leak on the header gasket but that’s an easy project and not really a big issue at this time. The 4-speed transmission seems to work well and was recently treated to a fresh service with gear lube. The shifter was also adjusted and is crisp & tight. The 8″ rear differential appears to be the original Limited-Slip with 3.00 gearing, so freeway driving is comfortable. The car wears 15″ Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tyres which are in excellent shape, with 215 x 65’s on the front and 235 x 60’s on the rear.
So, there you have it, a good base as a driving restorer for the entry level enthusiast.
