1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible powered by a 2.8L 170cui ‘Special’ 6-cyl Ford engine and driven by a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission.
Some major and historic changes were in store for the 1963 Falcons. A new sporty convertible model was introduced, and mid-year 63 ½ models were later introduced including the popular Sprint hardtops and convertibles. The two new Futura Convertibles (one with bucket seats, the other with bench) were introduced at the beginning of the 1963 model year on September 28, 1962. And did you know that a 4-door Futura convertible was proposed? A prototype was built, but never produced by Ford.
Soft-top lovers had been asking for this car for a while – and finally it arrived, brand-new for ’63, and the neat-stowing automatic top opened new vistas for the Falcon!! And these Falcon Convertibles were no “do-it-yourself” models, either. Tops were automatic, like convertible tops should be, and they snug down almost flat when folded. There was a choice of 5 interiors upholstered in bright vinyl that laugh at weather and wear. It was said of the Futura Convertible – “it was for top-down fun at a down-to-earth price.”
This car was produced on the 16th January 1963 in Ford’s Lorain, Ohio plant as a Falcon Futura convertible and was fitted with a 170cui inline six-cylinder ‘Special’ engine. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Rangoon Red paint and trimmed with Red Crush vinyl interior and fitted with a front bench seat. It was matched with a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission paired to a 3.50:1 ratio conventional rear differential and delivered to the Washington, Maryland district sales office. The car was last registered in Virginia in 1997 and was imported into Australia in 2012.
We believe this to be a number’s matching drivetrain in this car, and it is a very solid car in original condition, apart from a repaint some years ago. Floors, frame & trunk are very solid. In fact, the floorpans have been professionally replaced not that long ago, and an underside protective coating has been applied. Both the glass and brightwork are good, however there is some pitting in the chrome in places. The interior is in very good condition for its age, with only some minor blemishes to speak of. The electronic convertible top is operational, but does have a slight tear on the rear passenger side. You will find the typical stone chips, small dents, minor rust bubbling and paint blemishes in some places. The car runs, drives and stops very nicely.
The car is not currently registered, however it does have previous registration history, and we will also supply a Vehicle Import Approval.
Remember, this is not a muscle car, but rather a very good period correct survivor of its era. It is an iconic car of early Aussie motoring history, that is a nice cruiser without the roar and tyre screech thing happening!!
