1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 2-dr Hardtop Sport Coupe powered by a 6.5L 396cui V8 GM Chevy big block engine matched to a Muncie M21 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission and driven through a 12-bolt positrac rear differential with 3.31 gears.
This Chevelle SS396 was built in GM’s Kansas City, Missouri plant in the 2nd week of July 1969 and was painted Hugger Orange and featured Black vinyl front bucket seats. It was tagged at Kansas City plant with an “L” stamp meaning that it was produced as an SS-optioned 2-dr hardtop coupe.
This is a very cool example of classic late 60’s Muscle. Bright in your face paint, black stripes, big motor and a 4- speed all wrapped in a bold package.
This Chevelle originated from Montana where it’s been garaged for many years. The restoration was done approximately 20 years ago, and it hasn’t seen much use apart from sunny day cruising since. The paint quality is quite nice with some minor stone chips here and there; and you would call this one a 5-footer. Going around the body there are no obvious signs of rust or prior repair, and the bright trim and moldings look great.
Inside the factory Black bucket seat interior still looks amazing and features a centre console housing a 4-speed shifter. During the restoration the interior was treated to new carpet and headliner. The seat upholstery is reported as being original with one panel being replaced on the driver’s seat.
Under the hood lives a 396cui big block. This one is a correctly coded (IV suffix coded) SS396 engine, though this is not the VIN stamped original. The engine has been upgraded with an aluminum intake, Holley carburetor, large camshaft, roller rockers, long tube headers and more. The Muncie 4-speed transmission is shifted via a Hurst shifter. The transmission works well, though it needs a deliberate downshift into 2nd which seems to be a common M-21 trait.
The power steering and the power-assisted front disc brakes make this a very easy car to live with, as the steering is supple and the braking is confident & consistent.
Out back the 3.31 geared 12-bolt differential is a strong unit, perfectly geared for town or highway use and best of all its a Posi-Traction!
Rolling stock consists of the correct 14″ Super Sport specific wheels with BF Goodrich tyres.
Most old muscle cars make do with either a crackly old AM radio or often none at all. This Chevelle has been fitted with a full custom sound system…and it THUMPS! A high-end receiver, multiple speakers, subs, amps and an auxiliary battery are stashed throughout the cabin & trunk.
So, there you have it, definately a very rare car and even harder to find in this condition!
