1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback powered by a 7.0L 428cui V8 Ford ‘Police Interceptor’ big block engine and driven by a C6 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission.
By 1968, the Shelby GT500 was in its second year of production, and it had become increasingly evident that many consumers wanted nothing more than to slide behind the wheel of an immensely powerful street car, and Ford, as well as Carrol Shelby, were happy to oblige.
For the 1968 production year, the Shelby GT500 featured a more aggressively styled front end, and a new front hood brought the GT500’s twin air scoops further forward, toward its leading edge. Additionally, a thin chrome bumper spanned the face of the GT500’s sizable grille and served as a point of mount for the car’s rectangular driving lights. Louvered cooling vents were also added to the hood. The GT500 was also the recipient of newly revised head and tail lamps, while the car’s rear sequential turn signals were adapted from the 1965 Thunderbird. Also in the rear, a new spoiler was integrated into the GT500’s deck lid.
The early 1968 Shelby GT500 was originally fitted with its signature 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8 upon its release. The powerplant was equipped with a single 715 cfm Holley R-4129 carburetor, as well as a specialty aluminum intake manifold. This engine was rated at 335 horsepower with 440 lb-ft of torque, though these figures are thought to be extremely conservative in nature. Police Interceptor equipped Shelby GT500’s were capable of posting ¼ mile times of 14.97 seconds at 99.6mph.
The pictures speak for themselves on this one. This one was professionally restored and has been garage stored since. Only a handful of miles have been clocked since completion. This is an original car and carries its original stampings, the Shelby tag is a reproduction but the original weathered tag is included. The paint on this one is amazing. This is a factory Highland Green car that looks incredible with a nice deep shine. The panels line up very well. This is a show quality car. The stripes were done in a custom green rather than white or black. The side stripes are vinyl and the Le Mans stripes are painted and under the clear.
The interior was an amazing design in the day and its just as cool today. With woodgrain accents, Stewart Warner gauges, 140 mile per hour speedo, 8k rpm tachometer, factory roll bar, inertia reel shoulder harnesses and a custom console this was not a stock Mustang interior. The original engine had been replaced early in the car’s life. So at great expense a correct date code block was obtained and used for this restoration. The engine was rebuilt to stock specs as was the transmission. The engine compartment is complete and correct down to the factory smog equipment. The undercarriage has been detailed well beyond the stock specifications. With a full coat of red oxide primer, correct finishes on suspension & steering and brand new fluid lines throughout.
This ’68 Shelby is a documented rotisserie restored car and is supported by Marti verification. In 1968 only 1020 Shelby’s were built, and this is build #1004, of which only 356 had this paint/trim combination, making this a rare car indeed. Definately a car for the enthusiast or collector, all the hard work is done!!
