1970 Pontiac Le Mans 2-Dr Sport Convertible powered by a No’s Matching 5.8L 354cui V8 GM Pontiac small block engine and driven by a THM350 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission.
This ’70 is a Le Mans Sport, which was kind of a mid-way option between the standard Le Mans and the GTO. This Sport is equipped with the GTO reinforced trailing arms and sway bars as well as the dual exhaust exit valance & tips.
It’s pretty hard to find a more original or well preserved example than this car. There are no obvious signs of prior collision or panel repair, and it appears that there has only been one respray of the original Sierra Gold. The repaint still has a nice factory appearing shine that really gives this car an authentic survivor look. The chrome & bright trim all appear to be original with the proper amount of aging, but no obvious pitting or ‘crazing’ so common in older chrome. There is wear as this is a 52 year old car, just not the amount you would expect. As far as rust goes, this one is extremely good. The only visible rust is a couple of pin-head sized bubbles at the bottom of the passenger quarter panel, and you have to go looking hard to find them too.
Inside the interior appears to be the original and still presents quite well. The dash trim is still vivid, not sun faded or yellowed. The gauge faces are clear and the needles still bear the bright orange paint. There is some wear, but again, it’s 52 years old. The seats are still comfortable and the feel is unmistakable.
The convertible top will need a new rear window as the glass was broken some time ago. The previous owner never drove the car in the rain so the top very rarely went up, and the hydraulics still do work properly. The upholstery is pretty nice, well within the scope of the car. The only thing needed will be the rear window.
Under the bonnet lives the original number’s matching 350 V8. The 350 spins to life quickly and sounds great through the dual exhaust system. The Pontiac’s were torque monsters and this one lives up to the billing. Just a light press on the throttle and the car responds quickly on the road. Obviously a 4-barrel upgrade would significantly help out the top end, but for a cruiser …. this one feels perfect. The 350 still looks quite stock with the correct bracketry to the air cleaner still in place. The air conditioning compressor and the rest of the system are still in place though the system will require a recharge.
So there you go, a good honest unmolested survivor which is supported by the original Dealer Invoice & Options List documentation.
