Car Description

1965 Pontiac GTO 2-door Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.6L 461cui stroker V8 GM big block engine and driven by a Turbo HydraMatic THM400 3-speed console-shift automatic transmission.

The 1st generation GTO was a muscle car built by GM’s Pontiac division from 1964 to 1974. In 1965 the GTO was not a model in it’s own right but an ‘optional package’ that was offered on the intermediate-sized Pontiac Tempest range, hence beginning the heritage of it’s name – ‘Grand Tempest Option’

The ‘GTO’ found fame as the car to have; parents didn’t realise just what it was, nor did insurance companies; every teenager when they got their first license wanted a GTO because it was cool, fast and relatively unknown as a muscle car. That of course was to change, the GTO went on to become one of the best-selling muscle cars ever.

Running gear for the 1965 model year GTO included a 6.4L 389cui 335hp V8 engine with a single Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, chromed valve covers and air cleaner, 7 blade clutch fan, a floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission with Hurst shifter, stiffer springs, larger diameter front sway bar, wider wheels with 7.50 x 14 redline tyres, hood scoop, and GTO badging. Inside you found front bucket seats with a centre console, the interior trim was a very durable Morrokide vinyl, and the seat pattern was diamond appliques featuring the Pontiac crest.

This car has had a very nice restoration and features an upgraded drivetrain. The car was built in Fremont California and has been a dry-state west coast car all of its life. It is ‘rust free’ and presents in excellent condition. Mechanically this car will surprise you, it is very fast & fun to drive – it is genuine MUSCLE. Also available is the original matched 6.4L 389cui V8 engine which has been retained.
