Original Survivor 1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a 5.6L 340cui V8 Chrysler LA-series small block engine with 6-Pack Holley carburetors and matched to a A-727 TorqueFlite 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission and driven through a 8.75″ Sure-Grip differential.
What a rare and interesting investment opportunity! This is what we’d consider a “survivor”, an original AAR Cuda, which has spent all its life in cental California. This AAR Cuda was in hibernation in a climate controlled garage since 1989 and has been recently bought back to life. Only 104 AAR Cuda’s were built in this colour FK5 Deep Burnt Orange Metallic in the one-off production year of 1970, making this a rare and collectible car indeed. During this production phase, which only lasted a total of five (5) weeks, only 2,724 cars in total were built to meet AAR requirements.
Unfortunately, it looks like the original 340 block was replaced for unknown reasons somewhere along the line, as the numbers on the block are just a few digits off. So, it is a 1970 340 block and heads, with the original intake manifold and Six-Pack carburetor set up. The engine was rebuilt at some point, and has only travelled 5,451 miles since the rebuild, and it features a healthy sounding performance cam profile. The car does feature its original numbers matching HD A-727 TorqueFlite transmission and 8.75″ Sure-Grip rear end with 3.55 gears.
We believe that the reportedly original paint is in fact, the original factory applied FK5 Deep Burnt Orange Metallic paint with a Black Vinyl top roof. The top may have been replaced at some point and there are no bubbles or blisters showing anywhere coming up from under it. The original Trans Am / AAR Stripes are still being proudly displayed across its sheet metal. Speaking of the sheet metal, it is worth mentioning that the car has had a couple of bumps and bruises over the years, as can be seen in the photos. No major wrecks, but she’s taken a few nudges here and there. There are some minor sheet metal rust issues, but nothing structural and nothing that can’t be easily repaired by a body shop. A lot can happen to a car in 53 years, but this one still surprisingly shines up well and has recently been brought back to running / drivable status after its long slumber.
Inside you’ll find a complete, albeit aged, interior. Aside from the 1980’s style stereo, little else has been altered from factory. All of the correct parts seem to still be in tact, making this a relatively easy restoration. Underneath you find very nice original floors and frame rails together with trunk pan, evidence of its storage in a Californian dry climate.
The ‘Trans Am’ package included the following features:- T/A 340 Six Pack & AAR 340 Six Barrel only, power front ventilated disc brakes, 11″ rear drum brakes, 8.75″ axle w/ 3.55 ratio gears, Sure Grip, LH remote painted racing mirror, hood pins, rear spoiler, dual side exhaust, 26″ radiator w/ 7-blade torque fan, fibreglass hood w/ fresh air scoop, rear radio antenna, Rallye suspension, front & rear sway bars, Black Trans Am striping, collapsible spare wheel & E60 profile Polyglas tyres.
Cars like this are getting harder and harder to come by and are bringing huge money at auctions!!
