1970 Mercury Cyclone GT 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.0L 429cui-4v V8 Ford 385-series ‘Thunder Jet’ big block engine matched to a 4-speed close ratio floor-shift manual transmission driven through a 9″ Traction-Lok rear differential with 3.00:1 gearing.
This is a 4th Gen (1970-1971) Cyclone, and for the sporting gentleman that placed more emphasis on style than speed, there was the Cyclone GT. The basic package offered comfort weave bucket seats, full-length console, twin racing mirrors, integrated hood scoop that could be made functional for optional ram air induction, hide-away headlights, three pod tail lights and unique lower-body line trim.
This Cyclone GT was built in Ford’s Lorain, Ohio plant on the 24th October 1969 and was painted Deep Gold Metallic and featured White Comfort weave vinyl interior with front hi-back bucket seats. It was produced as an N-code 429cui-4v V8 “Thunder Jet’ engined car with a 4-speed close ratio floor-shift manual transmission and driven through a Traction-Lok rear differential with 3.00:1 gearing, and was first delivered to the Seattle, Washington DSO on the US Pacific North Coast where it has spent all of its life.
Are you looking for a 1970’s Big Block Muscle Car, but something different and rare? Then check out this Mercury Cyclone GT!!
This car has a lot of originality to it. It is not a resurrected junk yard dog, but rather has had a pampered and easy life stored in a climate-controlled garage. There is no evidence that it has ever been wrecked or suffered any major rust issues.
The 429 runs smooth and exhibits strong low-end grunt and it shift through the gears with a smile. This car comes with a Marti Report and the original build sheet. It features factory fitted power steering and power assisted front disc brakes.
This is not a show car by any means, however it is very solid, presentable and attracts attention going down the road. Great looking ‘Magnum 500’ wheels finish off the look.
The interior is very clean for its original status. There has been a minor alteration to the original center console due to damage, otherwise it is very presentable and correct. The car features the Cyclone tachometer and gauge cluster upgrade, and the factory intermittent wiper kit, which were very nice options.
So, there you have it, a very solid and turn-key car that is ready to enjoy now and to further tinker with.
