1966 Ford Thunderbird 2-dr Landau Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.0L 428cui V8 Ford ‘FE-series’ big block engine matched to a C6 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission and driven through a Ford 9″ rear differential.
The 4th-Gen of the Ford Thunderbird saw it produced by Ford as a large sport coupe or convertible for the 1964 to 1966 model years, and was informally known as the “Glamour Bird’ due to its all new styling. This generation of the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off, “formal” look. The only remnant of the Thunderbird’s former sporty image was the fact that the standard 390-cubic-inch 300 hp (224 kW) V8 engine was still offered as standard equipment. When Ford rolled out the 1966 Thunderbird, it was reputed to be the ultimate personal luxury car available in the American market. The Ford Thunderbird’s list of fashionable features earned it such a reputation amongst cars of its size in the 1960’s. Some new innovations for 1966 included front disc brakes and sequential rear turn-signal indicators. Jet Age styling cues, especially inside, set the 1964-66 Thunderbirds apart from the competition and continue to captivate enthusiasts and collectors even today.
This Thunderbird was produced in the last week of December 1965 in Ford’s Wixom, Michigan plant as a Thunderbird Landau 2-dr hardtop coupe and was fitted with a ‘Q-Code’ 428cui V8 4-bbl big block engine, that was matched with a C6 3-spd ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ column-shift automatic transmission and paired to a Ford 9″ conventional rear differential running a 3.00:1 axle ratio. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Ford’s Medium Silver Mink Metallic paint with a Black vinyl top, trimmed with Red vinyl interior and fitted with front bucket seats and a centre console. This car was then delivered to the Los Angeles, Southern California district sales office where it has spent all its life before arriving in Australia in 2016.
The car presents very well, and due to its dry climate heritage is rust free. It has seen two (2) repaints in its life; the first to Red and the second more recently back to its original factory colour of Medium Silver Mink Metallic. There are minor scratches and paint blemishes here and there, but overall in very good condition. The powertrain runs strong and features some recent updates including a new distributor & coil, Edelbrock carburetor & air cleaner, new dual exhaust system and fuel tank. The air conditioning is currently not operational with the compressor having been removed. The interior is in good original condition with only some minor imperfections. The car runs and drives awesome, with a deep throaty exhaust tone.
This is believed to be a No’s Matching Thunderbird that presents in excellent condition; so if you are in the market for a comfy, but throaty cruiser, then don’t miss this Big Bird!!
