Car Description

1972 Ford Thunderbird 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.0L 429cui-4v V8 Ford ‘385-series’ big block engine, matched to a C6 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission and driven through a Ford 9″ conventional differential with 3.00 gearing and showing only 69,151 original miles.

               Genuine BARN FIND Collector Car
Very Nice Ivy Bronze Metallic Paint
               Running 7.0L 429cui-4v V8
               C6 3-speed Automatic
               Power Steering
               Power Assisted Front Disc Brakes
               Ford 9″ Rear Differential

The 1972 Thunderbird was the first of the model’s 6th-generation, and it was to become the epitome of the ‘personal luxury car’. The car was beautifully styled and was a head turner, with very sleek lines and its low-cut roofline made it appear to have had a custom “chop job”. There was plenty of room for the front passengers, the car was extremely quiet, a very smooth ride and the power steering was totally effortless. Although there was a large production run in this year, very few examples of this generation of Thunderbird are regulars at cruise nights or car shows.

This Thunderbird was produced in December 1971 in Ford’s Pico Rivera, Los Angeles, Southern California plant as a Thunderbird 2-dr hardtop coupe and was fitted with a ‘N-Code’ 429cui-4v V8 ‘385-series’ big block engine, that was matched with a C6 3-spd ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ column-shift automatic transmission and paired to a Ford 9″ conventional rear differential with 3.00:1 gearing. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Ford’s Medium Ivy Bronze Metallic paint with a Dark Green vinyl top; trimmed with Dark Green cloth/vinyl interior and fitted with a front split bench seat and featuring a folding armrest. This car was then delivered to the San Jose, Northern California district sales office where it was sold by the selling dealer Downtown Ford Sales to its first owner in Sacramento on the 1st February 1972, and where it had spent all its life prior to arrival in Australia.

This car was purchased at a Charity Auction and subsequently shipped into Australia in January 2003 by the current ‘collector’ owner, and it has been stored indoors undercover all that time. This car is very original and unmolested, and still wears its original body panels and has had one repaint in 2018 in its original factory colour of Medium Ivy Bronze Metallic. The interior and upholstery are in original condition with only some minor imperfections, particularly the driver’s seat which shows sweat staining. The passenger side power windows are not currently operating. The glass & brightwork are all in very good condition. The vinyl roof is in great condition, with its simulated alligator skin look and feel. The underside of the car is amazing with no hint of rust, with the floor pans and frame rails being very solid and in fantastic shape.

Apart from a repaint in 2018, there has been mechanical work performed on the car, including the installation of a new aluminium radiator, starter motor and alternator; replacement of spark plugs & leads and the replacement of the C6 transmission filter & gaskets. The owner also can provide the original 1972 Ford Thunderbird ‘Owner’s Manual’ together with various USA registration documents, emission checks and the original radio manual. The car had its last inspection certificate in 2002, when it was last on the road in Northern California.

So, there you have it, a genuine Collectors Barn-Find car with a No’s Matching drivetrain and in rust-free condition. It is in a running and driving condition, with some carburetor work required to achieve its full potential. Obviously coming out of hibernation there will be due diligence required with re-hydrating, lubrication & oils as there always is with this age of car and having sat in storage for years.
