1968 Ford LTD Brougham 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a 6.4L 390cui-2v V8 Ford FE-series Thunderbird Special big block engine and driven by a FMX 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission.
The Ford LTD was a range of automobiles manufactured by Ford Motor Company for the 1965 to 1986 model years. Introduced as the highest trim level of the full-size Ford model range, then the Galaxie, the LTD offered options and features that had previously only been reserved for more luxurious Lincoln and Mercury models. The LTD designation has been speculated by some to be an abbreviation of “Luxury Trim Decor”.
It appears that 1968 was the first year that the Brougham Trim Option was offered on the LTD models, and this option gave you knit nylon upholstery, pleated cushions with tufted seat backs with embroidered center panels, bright metal frames on seat sides, rear centre armrest, and 100% nylon cut-pile carpeting, plus the Brougham name on the right side of the dash. The LTD shared several exterior styling touches with the XL, including new for 1968 concealed headlights as well as vertical trim on the taillights, that were not found on Galaxie 500 and lower models. While almost all LTDs had a vinyl roof covering, it was optional instead of standard.
This LTD Brougham was built in Ford’s Twin Cities, Minnesota plant on the 6th February 1968 with Presidential Blue paint, Dark Blue Cloth/Vinyl ‘Brougham’ interior and as a 2-dr hardtop coupe, and was delivered to the Seattle, Washington DSO where this car was sold to the current family and has been housed all it’s life. Condition wise, this one has some bumps & bruises on the original body & paint mainly from garage rash for the last few decades of storage. There is virtually no body rust on this car and cosmetically the paint shows some fading & scratches.
The interior still presents in very good original condition and the vinyl top appears to be in pretty good condition as well. Under the bonnet the no’s matching 390 fires up easily and runs excellent, and you will still find numerous factory chalk marks and hose clamps still in place on the engine. The transmission goes into gear quickly and shifts properly.
This is an unmolested and rust free one-family owned original survivor car, with a genuine documented 131,366 miles – these are becoming harder to find as each year goes by!
