1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport 2-dr Fastback powered by a No’s Matching 5.8L 351cui-2v V8 Cleveland small block engine and driven by a Heavy Duty C4 3-spd T-bar console-shift automatic transmission.
Only one car from the 70’s had a movie made where it was literally the title of the movie – ‘GRAN TORINO’.
Well before Clint Eastwood’s movie ‘Gran Torino’ had come out, the ’72 Gran Torino’s already had bit of a cult following. In 1972 this car model was a one (1) year only front end with an aggressive hood scoop and a unique grill. Most of them came with an extensive molding package fit for the times, but this car was fitted with the ‘Sport’ package which gave you a Laser Stripe down the body sides which (thankfully) deleted the standard moldings. These cleaned up the car quite a lot and helped break up the big broad body sides of the bigger for ’72 Torino’s. The result was a surprisingly good looking mid-sized Muscle Car.
This car has spent most of it’s life under the sun and on the dirt roads of Montana, and more recently in Washington state.
This ’72 wears an older and worn repaint of its original Light Pewter Metallic paint. The car still looks great at a glance, or from a distance, but at closer inspection the clear is failing. Overall the panels line up quite well and the chrome trim is in exceptional condition. Going over the car it is quite solid, but it does show rust at the drivers rear wheel openings and passenger rear lower corners, which was common for this model. The trunk and floors which are so often issues in these cars are overall quite good with only a small soft spot area on the passenger rear floor.
Inside, this one has the super desirable factory bucket seats with the floor shift console. Obviously the interior has been ‘upgraded’ with knitted custom seating complete with matching headliner at some time, and this wasn’t a cheap job when done, and the more you see it…the more you like it.
Under the hood is still the original no’s matching 351 V8 Cleveland engine. It fires up easily and runs very well. We didn’t get any information on prior rebuilds. The transmission is the heavy duty C4, often referred to as the C5. It works nicely but does have a small leak out of the bellhousing. This one has sat for several years in Montana so there is a chance the seal will soften and re-seal, but then again it might not.
It features Magnum 500 chrome wheels and Cooper Cobra tyres that are both brand new, with the wheels being 15×7″ reproductions fitted with the correct wheel centre caps, and the tyres being 215/65 series.
In summary, it is an unmolested driver quality car which is a solid platform for restoration.
