1968 Ford Galaxie XL 2-dr hardtop coupe powered by a 7.0L 428cui V8 Ford FE-Series Thunderbird big block engine and driven by a C6 Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed console-shift automatic transmission.
428 Big Block – Numbers Matching
Appropriately named, everything is Xtra Large and beautiful on this one. And it’s packing some seriously big muscle! But don’t be frightened by the largeness, this car is a gentle giant begging for the open roads! The mileage on the odometer is currently just over 67,000 and is reported to be the original. At the heart lies an excellent running numbers matching ‘Q-Code’ 428cui Big Block combined with a C6 transmission. This motor according to the last two owners is original and untouched – and we believe this to be true. Recently the carburetor was rebuilt along with new plugs & leads, thermostat and water pump. The motor starts right up as it should, with a smooth idle and the power is instant. The car is simply smooth – it drives and rides smooth, shifts smoothly and comes to a stop nicely with power brakes. One can imagine some dual exhaust to help that big block breath a little better and enhance the growl one would expect from a 428.
This car was repainted some time ago and shows well with only a few imperfections and no major dents or dings. The moldings, glass and bumpers look great and with a little more elbow grease, the chrome will polish up with even more shine than it already has. Rust is not a concern with this car and good thing because there’s a lot of steel!
Jump inside and you are welcomed by the original and comfy bucket seats (power drivers seat) with a centre console. Both drivers and passenger seats tilt forward for easy access to the huge rear seat. Tilt steering keeps things proper for drivers of every size. The windows and wing windows roll up/down and in/out as they should. Gauges, blinkers and lights work properly as does the heater and wipers. The front seats being original are now due for vinyl replacement.
This is a great example of the big Ford Galaxie XL model and with it’s numbers matching drivetrain and low original mileage is certainly a candidate for an enthusiast.
