1962 Ford Galaxie 500 2-dr Club Victoria Hardtop powered by a 6.4L 390cui-4v V8 Ford ‘FE-series’ High Performance big block engine matched to a 3-spd w/ overdrive column-shift manual transmission and driven through a Ford 9″ rear differential.
Ford introduced the Galaxie in 1959 and in went on in production until 1974. The car’s name drew inspiration from the space race that was taking place in that era. For 1962 the Ford Galaxie 500 saw more of a softer and rounder look than its younger siblings, and with the tailfins gone, the 500 models did appear to be much more refined and plush. The look and shape of the 1962 Galaxie 500 was pretty remarkable and way ahead of its time.
Background:-
“At the open of the 1962 model year, the engine and drivetrain choices were carryovers from 1961 and topping the list was the 375hp 390 four-barrel High Performance ‘FE-series’ engine. It still had the open element breather, solid-lifter cam, individual runner exhaust manifolds, dual-point distributor, and high 10.6:1 compression ratio, which was a full point higher than the standard 300hp passenger car 390. Ford’s automatic transmission design was still based in the 1950’s, so the powerful 390 was available only with a manual transmission: three-speed or three-speed overdrive. The standard axle ratios were 3.56:1 for the three-speed and a steeper 4.11:1 for the overdrive. Ford even beefed up the suspension, adding heavy-duty springs and shocks front and rear, fade-resistant brake shoes, larger 3″ wide brake drums, 15″ wheels, nylon-ply tyres, a heavy-duty 3″ diameter driveshaft, and a four-pinion differential.”
This car was produced on the 27th November 1962 in Ford’s Twin Cities, Minnesota plant as a Galaxie 500 2-dr Club Victoria hardtop and was fitted with a ‘Q-Code’ 390cui-4v V8 4-bbl high performance big block engine, that was matched with a 3-spd overdrive column-shift manual transmission and paired to a Ford 9″ conventional rear differential running a 4.11:1 axle ratio. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Ford’s Raven Black paint and trimmed with Black vinyl interior.
Mechanically the car features a recent rebuild of the 375hp 390 engine, which has only travelled minimal miles since. Interior wise the car is very complete and usable as is. The upholstery is original and is splitting at the seams in places. Externally the car has had partial restoration work done, but does show paint peel & flaws, stone chips and minor dings & dents. However, overall it as a very solid car featuring what appears to be original body panels, and still wearing its original underside which shows reasonably solid floors and trunk with surface rust only. The frame and structure of the car looks decent also with only surface rust visible. It will require a repair on the rear passenger floorpan as can be seen in the photo’s, and there may be some other minor rust repairs to be undertaken, but nothing extraordinary.
The car runs and drives nicely and features new American Racing ‘Torque Thrust’ 15″ wheels & Cooper Cobra Radial GT tyres. This Galaxie shows as a well kept, very original car that is in a great position to either continue to be well kept and enjoyed as a survivor, or is a perfect platform to be taken to the next level and restore to whatever condition is wanted.
Now, fast forward and living in this generation, a car with this drivetrain, makes for a rare acquisition for either the survivor or restorer enthusiast!
