1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 2-Door Hardtop Coupe powered by a 5.2L 318cui V8 Chrysler LA-series small block engine and driven by a 3-speed TorqueFlite column shift automatic transmission.
The 4th generation compact sized Dart was produced from 1967 through to 1976. The Dart was refreshed for 1970 with front and rear changes designed to bring the car closer to the design themes found in Dodge’s full-size vehicles through grille and contour changes. In the rear, the Dart’s new rectangular tail lights were set into a wedge-shaped rear bumper design continuing the angled trailing edge of the new deck lid and quarter panels. Changes to the fuel system improved drivability, economy and emission control, and part-throttle downshift was added to the 8-cylinder automatic transmissions. Side marker lights and reflectors were installed at all four corners. 1970 Darts for the US and Canadian markets were built in Canada at the Windsor, Ontario or Los Angeles, California assembly plants, and all 1970 Darts got the federally mandated steering column and ignition lock.
The “Swinger” name was applied to all the Dart two-door hardtops, and a number of other changes were made to the Dart line to avoid internal competition with Dodge’s new ‘Challenger’ model that was about to be released.
Darts were designed to be a ‘Bang for the Buck’ car. They were built light, available with a full line of V8 engines from mild to wild and priced cheap. Where else can you find a ’70 Mopar in Factory Ordered Plum Crazy, Factory Hood Scoops & a Go Wing, a throaty V8, Disc Brakes, Crisp Black Interior and a Super Solid Original Panel Body and priced like this.
Plum Crazy paint cars are among the most desirable of Mopar’s offerings. This Dart wears the coveted FC7 paint code for Plum Crazy, with the car being repainted in the correct color that presents very well. This particular car originates from central Montana and you will find the body on this Dart is quite impressive with no obvious signs of rust or prior rust repair. The trim is nice, though the rear bumper does show some thin chrome. Overall it presents very well, an ideal weekend warrior vehicle.
Inside, the interior looks very nice with recent upholstery, carpet and door panels. The original dash pad is in great shape. Rather than cut the dash a single DIN stereo has been installed under the dash. Overall this is a very nice interior. Under the hood lives a 318 dressed with a 340 air cleaner pie tin. This 318 has been upgraded with an aluminum intake manifold and a Street Demon carburetor. It fires up easily on the electric choke and has a great note to the idle. With power steering and front disc brakes, this Dart is an easy and fun driver. The steering is crisp and responsive, braking is consistent and straight with a nice easy pedal effort, and it cruises nicely around town or on the highway.
