1970 Dodge Charger R/T Tribute 2-dr Sports Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.2L 440cui 450hp V8 Chrysler RB-series ‘Magnum’ engine and driven by a TorqueFlite 727 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission.
Tons to love on this 2nd Gen Charger!! Plum Crazy is one of the most iconic paint colors from the Muscle Car Era, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint here. This Charger has been nicely upgraded with a performance built 440 Magnum engine, 727 automatic and a Sure-Grip equipped 8 3/4″ rear diff. This one has no problems burning off the 275’s with just a tickle of the throttle. It will keep you smiling.
There is no body plate attached to this car, however we can tell from the VIN that it was built in Chrysler’s St. Louis, Missouri plant in 1970 as a Charger 500 featuring a 383cui-2v big block engine.
The body on this Charger is one of the better ones you will find. It is wearing an old repaint that still presents quite well, we would call it a 15-20 footer. There is still a decent shine and the panels align well. There are some dings, scratches nicks & bobbles visible on close inspection, but what you don’t see much of is rust, the common killer of Chargers. This Charger could easily be driven as is and repainted years down the road. This originally was a vinyl roof car, but it now wears a Black painted roof. But right now though in its present condition, its a no-guilt driver; and after a re-paint it would be a clean street machine.
Inside is similar to the out. It’s clean & proper but when you go looking it does have wear. The 53 year old door panels aren’t quite what they used to be. Again, it certainly can be used as-is and any upholstery work can be undertaken down the road years if that’s what you want. This Charger is equipped with a factory Tic-Toc-Tac, a very rare & desirable option. Currently it isn’t operating as are the original oil & temp gauges, though aftermarket gauges have been added under the dash.
Under the hood the work has been started. A 440cui ‘Magnum’ engine has been nicely built with an Edelbrock Performer RPM top end and a host of other go-fast goodies. Power is estimated at 450 horsepower, so it will definitely hold its own, but this isn’t a dedicated drag car, though you could visit if you wanted to. There is a tonne of receipt documentation for this build which is included. The 727 automatic transmission was also rebuilt to handle the power. Out back the 8 3/4″ diff was upgraded with 4.10 gearing and a Sure-Grip posi unit.
The wheels & tyres are brand new 15×7 Magnum 500’s with Cooper Cobra 235/60’s on the front and 275/60’s on the rear.
The car has incredibly solid original floors and trunk pan, and has no major rust issues to speak of. The floor pans have very minor pin holes showing, but not worthy of replacement; and both rear quarters have been replaced in the past.
This is a very solid car which is now showing an aged restoration, but which runs strong and is turn key ready to enjoy!!
