1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 2-door Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.2L 440cui ‘Magnum’ 375hp V8 Chrysler Mopar big block engine with a A-727 TorqueFlite 3-speed console-shift automatic transmission.
From 1970 to 1974, the first generation of Dodge Challenger pony cars were built using the Chrysler ‘E’ platform in both hardtop and convertible body styles, and shared major components with the Plymouth Barracuda. The Challenger was positioned to compete against the Mercury Cougar and the Pontiac Firebird in the upper end of the pony car market segment, and it was “a rather late response” to the Ford Mustang, which debuted in April 1964. Even so, Chrysler intended the new Challenger as the most potent pony car ever, and, like the less expensive Barracuda, it was available in a staggering number of trim and option levels, and with virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory. Unfortunately for the Challenger the pony car segment was already declining by the time it had arrived. Sales fell dramatically after 1970, and though sales rose for the 1973 model year, Challenger production ceased midway through the 1974 model year.
Through its leading role in the movie ‘Vanishing Point’, the Challenger R/T (Road & Track), of which just under 20,000 units in total were built, became a cult car, and explains it’s iconic status today.
This is an absolutely stunning fully restored 1970 R/T with many aftermarket options fitted. The original Medium Blue Metallic paint has been replaced with a lovely Dark Plum and features the period correct ‘U’-code 440cui ‘Magnum’ engine which has been built with Edelbrock aluminium heads. It is a ‘rust free’ car with super solid original floors & frame rails, it was built in Los Angeles, California where it has spent all it’s days in the west coast states of California & Oregon.
You don’t find Mopar muscle in this condition very often!!
