1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 2-dr Hardtop Coupe powered by a 6.5L 396cui V8 GM Chevy big block engine and driven by a M21 Muncie 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission through a 12-bolt posi-traction rear differential with 3.31 gears.
1968 saw the commencement of the 2nd-gen Chevelle’s, and with this model year they received an all-new distinctly sculpted body with tapered front fenders and a rounded beltline. The car adopted a long-hood/short-deck profile with a high rear-quarter “kick-up” and was shortened by 3″ in the wheelbase to 112″ overall. Top-trim models featured GM’s new Hide-A-Way wiper system.
Factory Black cars are amongst the most desirable of all Muscle Cars, and they are very hard to find, especially a good one!
This ’68 Chevelle is a 138 VIN car, so you know it’s an original SS396 car. From what we can see, every panel on this car appears to be the born-with original. This is also one of the most rust free original cars we have seen. If you are looking for a ‘Keeper’ this is what you have been likely looking for. The cowl tag lists this one as a color ‘code A’ for Tuxedo Black and believe it or not a ‘code 6’ for a White Vinyl top. It gets even cooler though. This is a single repaint car and the door jams are still the original paint. When the car came to us it had no striping but upon inspection the tail ends of the factory red tape stripes were still on the door corners. We quickly seized on this and ordered up a set of reproductions and installed them, and returned the originality. The current paint, while quite presentable, is older with some imperfections upon close inspection. We would call this one a 5-footer. It’s right on that border where you aren’t going to park in just any parking lot, but also not too nice to stretch its legs on the highway for a summer cruise.
Under the hood the 396 is a correctly coded IA 1968 engine but the VIN stamping does not match the car. So it is an era and code correct engine, just not a VIN match. The cylinder heads are a set of 1970 rectangle port open chamber units, so they are a bit easier on the fuel. The camshaft is a solid lifter unit, so it has just a mild rhythm to the valvetrain. The intake manifold is an Edelbrock Performer RPM with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. Exhaust manifolds are in place so it has somewhat of a stock appearance. The Muncie M21 close ratio transmission works nicely. The 3.31 12-bolt rear is a great all round gear giving you plenty of power down low and a livable highway rpm. Power is pretty impressive, so we figure it’s somewhere around the 400hp mark which gives you the best of performance without being too hot to run right.
The interior has front bucket seats and a floor-shift console. This car originally came with a front bench seat, however it has been replaced and converted to bucket seats, which was done with factory parts. New front seat upholstery and carpet were installed, with the rest of the interior being largely original and in good condition, with the exception of a split in the rear seat.
Take a good look at the photos, as this car is one of the most solid Chevelle’s around. It still wears its original trunk spatter paint along with the original jack and hardware. The paint around the cowl is original with none of the normal rust associated with the breed.
Definately very rare and even harder to find in this condition!
