1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 2-dr Convertible powered by a 6.5L 396cui V8 325hp GM Chev big block engine and driven by a THM400 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission.
This is a 2nd generation Chevelle (1968-1972) and in this year the Super Sport (SS396 sport coupe, convertible, and El Camino pickup) became a series in their own right. This is in fact today a VERY RARE car as only 2,286 SS396 convertibles were ever produced in 1968. This car was built in March 1968 at GM’s Fremont plant in northern California and was sold into the Seattle, Washington sales district where it has lived all it’s life.
This ’68 Chevelle is a rare specimen. Obviously Big Block Convertibles are rare, but this car packs a very nice option package and has records since new. This one was purchased new by a doctor who kept rather extensive written notes on the car. From every oil change to every tune up, its in there. Mileage, its in there too if you wish to read about it.
The paint was redone MANY years ago, approx early to mid 80’s, in the original colour of Butternut Yellow, and it still shines nicely which is amazing for a 40 year old repaint. The convertible top appears to be the original and looks quite nice. The moldings and trim show well but do have some patina from use. A garage stored car, it has been spared much of the corrosion normally found on vintage convertibles. The only visible rust is on the passenger rear quarter just in front of the wheel opening and a bubble on the driver’s door. The floors, trunk, cowl and frame are AMAZING. Factory paint still shines underneath.
The interior appears to be the original Parchment upholstery, and it is still soft and supple. Obviously there is some wear, but overall it is in good condition considering. A good cleaning and some vinyl dye would go along way in renewing this one. They can only be original once though.
The convertible top is in good condition and works nicely. The hydraulics are responsive and also work nicely. The latching mechanisms are in excellent shape with none of the usual corrosion. The power windows are another rare option and they work nicely too.
Under the hood the Original 396 is still in place and runs excellent. It carries the correct VIN stamping on the front of the block next to the correct 325hp suffix code. This engine is still equipped with its hot air ducting off the exhaust manifold. It is extremely rare to find such an un-touched example.
