Car Description

1969 Chevrolet Camaro 2-door Sport Coupe powered by a 5.7L 350cui V8 GM Chevy LM1 small block engine and driven by a THM 350 3-speed column-shift automatic transmission.

Rare Factory LM1 RPO Engine Option
               No’s Matching 350 V8 Small Block
               4-bbl Carburetor
               M38 THM350 3-spd Automatic
               HD 12-Bolt 8 3/4″ Rear Axle
               Multi-Leaf Rear Springs

The 1969 Camaro marked the last of the first generations and is arguably the most popular. It featured entirely new, more aggressive looking sheet metal and revised grille. Going away was the ‘coke bottle’ shape of the ’67-’68 models, making room for a flatter, wider looking stance. For the 1969 year the Sport Coupe was lower, longer and wider, had bucket seats, carpeting, and an improved ‘Astro’ Ventilation System.

Background:-

When it comes to famous option packages on classic Chevrolet cars, we all know about the Z28, Super Sport, Rally Sport, and even the ZL1 and COPO. But, how many of you know about a little-known RPO that was an option for only the first few months of the 1969 model year? The LM1 RPO engine option code was a little-known way for a Camaro buyer to get a 4-barrel equipped 350 cubic-inch small-block engine delivering 255 horsepower. This option allowed the Camaro buyer to get the 350 cubic-inch engine in a non-Super Sport Camaro. The LM1 was available with a manual-shift and automatic transmission options. LM1-equipped cars also received other high performance options like a 12-bolt rearend, multi-leaf rear springs, dual exhaust, a console, and a tachometer. Because of available options like these, many LM1-optioned cars are often confused with Super Sport cars. Most LM1 cars look like regular base-model Camaro’s on the outside, with dog dish “poverty” hub caps, no special badging, and a flat hood. This LM1 option was only built in the first four months of production of the 1969 model (Sept – Dec,1968) and represented only 4% of total Camaro production for that model year. Sometime in early January of 1969, RPO LM1 was replaced with RPO L65, which gave the buyer a 250 horsepower 350 cubic-inch engine with a two-barrel carburetor. It is reported that many LM1 cars were later badged as Super Sport cars, and since they were “Pre X Code” cars, it was hard to tell. The X Code was introduced to signify that a particular Camaro was something special when it was ordered. The LM1-optioned ’69 Camaro can be difficult to verify at a glance, since this model shared many of the performance features as the Super Sport. If the car does have the 12-bolt rearend and multileaf springs, but no disc brakes or dual exhaust, it’s probably an LM1-equipped car. But, if you add dual exhaust and disc brakes to the car, differentiating between the LM1 and Super Sport can be a difficult task in this day and age. The LM1 also shared the same chrome air cleaner as the Super Sport models so as to house the larger 4-bbl Quadrajet carburetor.

All LM1 and SS350 cars should have:-

  • 2 fuel lines due to the vapor return line for the Quadrajet carb
  • 12 bolt rear axles
  • rear brake line valve
  • multileaf rear springs
  • Muncie transmission (manual or auto)

SS cars had:-

  • disc brakes
  • dual exhaust
  • SS hoods (cowl hoods were not available until January of 1969)
  • wider wheels

So, there you have it, this LM1 car is a true ‘Sleeper’ having better performance and factory option upgrades than offered on the later standard L48 2-bbl 350 Camaro’s. This LM1 model actually preceded the well known ‘X-code’ options offered on SS models to follow. There is no way to know how many people ordered the LM1 to get a sleeper of a performace car, and how many people never realized that their LM1 car had drivetrain upgrades. They were considered in the day as the poor man’s or sleeper SS. Forward to 2023 and LM1’s are considered very collectible, particularly by the people who are familiar with what they are.

This Camaro was built in the last week of September 1968 in GM’s Norwood, Ohio plant as an LM1 RPO optioned 350cui V8 engined car and matched with a M38 THM350 3-spd automatic transmission and driven through a 12-bolt rear end. The car was painted in the factory colour combination of Glacier Blue and a Dover White roof, and featured Medium Blue deluxe vinyl trim.

This beautiful and rare optioned car started life in Los Angeles, California before moving to New Mexico. Given its residency, this is a rust free car with the floors, quarters & trunk all appearing to be the original born-with metal. While New Mexico will save a car from rust it isn’t as nice to paint. The car was recently repainted in the factory colors, Glacier Blue on the body and Dover White on top. Yes, this is a factory painted roof car which in itself is quite rare. Some chrome & bright trim was replaced but the bulk of the car remains original. The interior is in excellent condition.

This is a fun Camaro and presents as an extremely nice survivor, which in a way it is. The car is reported to have only 59,227 original miles and it looks great in this rare livery, and runs & drives beautifully. This is a very clean and solid car, still with its original rust free body panels and floors. The car, apart from the LM1 options mentioned, also features power steering, power assisted brakes, air conditioning and factory front bucket seats.

If you are looking for a very Rare, No’s Matching and low mileage Camaro that presents in excellent condition, then you can’t go past this offering!!
