The AMC AMX is a two-seat GT-style muscle car produced by American Motors Corporation from 1968 through 1970. As one of just two American-built two-seaters, the AMX was in direct competition with the 2.5 cm longer wheelbase Chevrolet Corvette, and for substantially less money. It was based on the new-for-1968 Javelin, but with a shorter wheelbase and deletion of the rear seat. In addition, the AMX’s rear quarter windows remained fixed, making it a coupe, while the Javelin was a true two-door hardtop. The AMX name originates from the American Motors experimental code used on a concept vehicle and then on two prototypes shown on the company’s “Project IV” automobile show tour in 1966. It was also the only American-built steel-bodied two-seater of its time, the first since the 1955–1957 Ford Thunderbird. The American Society of Automotive Engineers named the AMX as the “best engineered car of the year” in 1969 and 1970.

The AMX’s full second model year (1969) saw only slight changes. The five-spoke Magnum 500 steel road wheels were no longer chrome plated, but now came with a stainless steel trim ring. The racing stripes were now available in five colors. The interior featured a revised instrumentation with the 0–8000 rpm tachometer moved to match the speedometer that was now calibrated to 140 mph (230 km/h). Interior door panels were revised, carpeting was upgraded, new leather upholstery was optional, and the gas pedal became suspended. Starting January 1969, all manual transmission AMX’s came with a Hurst floor shifter. Adding to their rarity was the fact that only 3,690 390cui V8 4-speed AMX’s were built in 1969.

A total of 24 RHD 1969 model year AMX’s were hand assembled under license here in Australia by Australian Motor Industries (AMI) between August 1969 and July 1970, and they used the name Rambler AMX. However, these Australian built versions only saw the smaller 5.6L 343cui V8 engine and automatic transmission fitted.

AMC introduced this 2-seater AMX to battle the Corvette, and basically it was a shortened Javelin (which did quite well in SCCA racing vs Mustang’s & Camaro’s). The 390 was the top offering with an advertised 315hp and a T-10 4-speed transmission. These AMX’s were very competitive cars posting mid-14 second quarter miles in stock form. They also handled quite well thanks to their light weight.

This Willow Green example has come to us from the desert of Arizona where it lived with the previous owner for 30 years. Thanks to a dry climate and a nice garage this one has survived quite nicely. You will be hard pressed to find a better example. The paint is quite nice, easily a standout at your local car show. The only signs of corrosion on the body are a couple small bubbles in the passenger rear wheel well as seen in the photos. Inside this one is equally nice with just enough room for your best friend and some gear. The front buckets were re-upholstered and a full carpet kit installed. The door panels are still quite nice, especially for originals.

Under the bonnet the 390 runs excellent. The factory chrome valve covers are missing the engine number tag so numbers matching can’t be confirmed on this one. The previous owner stated that he believed it to be the original engine. The 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly through the factory ‘Hurst’ linkage. Finally, the car is adorned with factory Magnum 500 wheels with redline tyres, which really complete the look on this car!

So, there you have it, a rare high-performance sports car indeed!
