Car Description

1973 Oldsmobile Toronado 2-door Custom Hardtop Coupe powered by a 7.5L 455cui V8 GM Oldsmobile Rocket big block engine and driven by a THM-425 3-speed column shift automatic transmission and with only 100,612 original miles.

The 1st generation of Toronado’s were built from 1966-1970 on an E-body platform to transcend the Ford Thunderbird and GM’s own Buick Riviera and were designed as a personal luxury car. With its all new transaxle version of GM’s Turbohydramatic transmission the Toronado is historically significant as the first US produced front-wheel drive car since 1937. The unusual Toronado powertrain, which combined an engine and transmission into an engine bay no larger than a conventional rear-wheel drive┬ácar, was dubbed the ‘Unitized Power Package’ (UPP).

The 2nd generation of Toronado’s saw it with radically different styling from the first generation, the Toronado had metamorphosed from a ‘GT’ style car into something more traditional in the luxury car field. It was now more similar to the Cadillac Eldorado than the Buick Riviera, and the new look attracted many new buyers, as sales increased dramatically.

This particular 1973 model is a hard-to-find one-owner car with original miles, straight body and a very clean interior. It wears original faded metallic silver paint, which is still reasonable for it’s age, with minor nicks & scratches. Excellent glass, chrome, dashpad, carpet, headliner and upholstery. Mechanically the car is sound and drives good. There is minor bumper bar damage on the driver’s side rear, the drivers seat (shoulder) needs repair and it bears genuine paint patina on the roof, but overall a very nice luxury car with a classy silver / red colour scheme.

Not a project car by any means, but a good original-owner and matching numbers classic model from Oldsmobile, only requiring minor work and repaint to clean up and enjoy.
