1968 Ford Torino GT ‘Pace Car’ Convertible powered by a 6.4L 390cui-4v V8 Ford Fe-Series big block engine and driven by a C6 ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ 3-speed column-shift automatic transmission through a Ford 9″ differential.
This car was produced on the 6th May 1968 in Ford’s Lorain, Ohio plant as a Torino GT 2-dr convertible and was fitted with an ‘S-Code’ 390cui-4v V8 4-bbl big block engine. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Ford’s Wimbledon White and trimmed with Blue stripe vinyl interior with front bench seat. It was matched with a C6 3-speed column-shift automatic transmission and paired to a Ford 9″ diff with a 3.25:1 gearing ratio. The car when built was delivered to the Salt Lake City, Utah district sales office where it was sold new into Boise, Idaho where it has spent all its life.
These Torino Pace Cars were rare back in the day and have since almost become a myth. Many of them never received their side decals, so later owners weren’t even aware that they had something special on their hands. This Torino was special ordered in Boise where it was received by the owner on May 20th 1968 and has lived there since. This one was used sparingly and only shows 35k miles on the clock. Based on previous owners accounts and reasonable professional inspection, we do believe this to be an original 35K mileage car. It features minimal wear and tear, with still the original exhaust system and Ford parts attached that would be replacement items on a vehicle consistent with more use.
The drivetrain in this car is numbers matching, and the car runs and drives exceptionally well for its age. All the power accessories, lights and turn signals are operational. It is quite stock right down to the original born with mufflers & exhaust, and the 390 fires up easily and runs excellent.
Body wise, you would be hard pressed to find a finer original example. The passenger side was repainted but no damage to the body is evident. There was some paint flaking on the old repaired section so the areas were stripped & repainted. There is evidence that the passenger side was repainted some time ago, and it has received new Pace Car decals on this side. Apart from this item, all else is original paint and trim. The only exception is the convertible top which has now been replaced due to its age.
A great original example of a rare car with Marti Report verification!!
