1971 Ford Mustang 2-dr Mach 1 Fastback powered by a No’s Matching 5.8L 351cui-4v V8 Ford ‘Cleveland’ small block engine matched to a 4-spd Toploader manual transmission and driven through a conventional Ford 9″ rear differential running 3.25 gearing.
This ’71 Mustang was manufactured in Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan plant on the 4th June 1971 as a Mach 1 2-dr Fastback. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Grabber Yellow with Black knit vinyl interior trim with front Hi-Back bucket seats. It was fitted with an M-code 351cui-4v V8 high performance ‘Cleveland’ engine, 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission paired to a conventional 9″ rear differential with 3.25:1 gearing and delivered to the Salt Lake City, Utah DSO, where it was sold by the selling dealer Larson Ford Sales.
This Mach 1 is a really cool time-capsule left over from the 80’s. From the shadowed hand painted graphics to the super-sexy pinstripes you can feel just how cool this one was on Saturday nights. Air shocks & N50’s would have been a must, no longer there but you know they were. The 80’s were the height of the 351 Cleveland reverence. Huge cylinder heads, high compression, big cams, way oversized header tubes and good fuel still to be had at the pumps. Soon the 90’s would come and kill most of the cruising and good fuel forcing these cars off the road.
Originally bound for the Utah ordering district this Mach 1 spent its life in the dry regions of Utah and Eastern Washington. The floors are some of the nicest originals you will see in this breed. There is some minor rear wheel well rust to be found thanks to the rural nature of its home region, as shown in the photo’s. Overall though, this is a very solid example of the Mach 1 from this era. The paint has some age to it with plenty of imperfections. The original colour has been replaced with a closed door repaint in Orange. There are no obvious signs of significant collision damage. You could easily drive this one as is, or a repaint looks like a straight forward job thanks to an original metal body.
Inside, the interior has seen some refreshing with new front seat upholstery, carpet and dash pad upholstery. It really does look nice and shows very little wear, apart from a tear in the rear seat. The ‘Decor’ interior was an option for ’71 in the Mach 1’s, so many didn’t come with it. Also optional is the factory gauge package with centre stack gauges and a tachometer.
This Mach 1 started life out as a well optioned boulevard bruiser. The M-Code 351 4-bbl Cleveland was a well proven motor with potential well beyond most of its competitors. Add in that wide ratio 4-speed Toploader and a 9″ with 3.25 gearing and you really had a well-rounded performance car for nearly all situations. The 351 is the numbers matching engine, which is quite rare in a 4-speed muscle car these days. The transmission is the correct RUG-AV1 wide ratio unit and Hurst shifter. The engine revs incredibly smooth and has a mild cam, aluminum intake, long tube headers and sounds amazing. The 4-spd shifts like butter and the clutch engages nicely. The engine has quite little in the way of grime and it would appear to be a low mile engine.
The front & rear suspension and steering were just rebuilt with a long list of new reproduction components including upper and lower control arms, shocks, springs and more. This Mach 1 drives surprisingly well.
This Mach 1 is definately not a show car, but rather a very cool breed survivor that can be driven as it is, or restored easily and taken to the next level.
Please note: This Mustang is situated in the Pacific North-West of the US, with a clear title and is available for immediate import into Australia. This price is an ALL-INCLUSIVE landed price in Australia incl GST.
