1970 Dodge Charger R/T 2-dr Sports Fastback Coupe powered by a 7.2L 440cui 375hp V8 Chrysler RB-series ‘Magnum’ Hi-Performance engine matched to a TorqueFlite A727 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission and driven through a 8 3/4″ ‘Sure Grip’ posi rear differential with 3.23 gearing.
This Charger R/T was produced on the 15th November 1968 in Chrysler’s, Hamtramck, Michigan plant as a 2-dr fastback coupe and was fitted with a 7.2L 440cui-4v 375hp V8 Chrysler RB-series ‘Magnum’ Hi-Performance big block engine that was matched with a TorqueFlite heavy duty 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission and fitted with an 8 3/4″ ‘Sure Grip’ rear differential and 3.23:1 gearing. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in F8 Dark Green Metallic paint with transverse White stripes, trimmed with standard Black vinyl upholstery, fitted with front bucket seats and featured a Black vinyl roof.
This is one of the most striking combinations available for the ’69 Charger. The combination of F8 Dark Green Metallic paint with factory White ‘Transverse’ stripes made for a very unique combination.
This Charger was just repainted in the correct F8 Dark Green metallic single stage paint. Reproduction striping from Phoenix Graphics was installed as well, and the car looks amazing. The initial goal was to cover and protect the car after the lower rear quarter repairs and some body work. The car came out so nice the goal posts moved and the project snowballed. Soon a new front bumper was ordered and tail striping installed.
The 440 Magnum big block engine is the upgraded 375hp Hi-Performance, which is Non No’s Matching, and is running a mild performance camshaft. The original engine has been removed and the car is now running a period correct 1968 replacement. It fires up nicely and runs quite well. We didn’t receive any mileage or documentation on prior rebuilds. The TorqueFlite 3-spd transmission shifts nicely.
This is a factory bucket seat with centre console car. Inside the car is quite presentable with typical wear for its age and originality, but overall it still looks pretty good. The instrumentation works properly, though the gauges could use restoration or replacement as the numerics have been touched up.
The electrical system works properly and the system charges nicely. The wipers work as do the gauges. The turn signals, brake lights and even the reversing lights work. The vacuum headlights open and close as they should.
The car features new 15′ x 7″ ‘Magnum 500’ chrome wheels and new Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tyres w/ 275/60 (R) & 235/60 (F).
Being a driving restorer, there are a few things still left to do, eg. the passenger front marker light needs to be cut & installed as do the rear marker lights. We do have the front marker bezel painted to match but not the rears bezels. The centre console is broken in the rear; the dashpad has cracks and the door cards may need replacing. The trunk pan has been repaired with sheetmetal, but you may want to finish it more professionally. The front passenger side floor pan needs replacing. But for a ’69 Charger, this car is very solid indeed, and a great platform to enhance this iconic muscle car.
Make no mistake this Charger R/T is not a show car. But it is an ideal restorer candidate, as it is not far off being very presentable inside and out as it sits. Add your own touches and bring this R/T to its true muscle glory! So, with this in mind ask yourself the question, where do you find these Chargers in this condition??
