1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS 2-dr Sport Coupe powered by a 6.5L 396cui V8 GM Chevy big block engine matched to a Muncie M21 4-speed console-shift manual transmission and driven through a 12-bolt posi-traction rear differential with 3.08:1 gearing.
This Camaro was produced in the 3rd week of July 1968 in GM’s, Norwood, Ohio plant as a 2-dr hardtop sport coupe and was fitted with a 396cui V8 GM Chevy big block engine that was matched with a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in GM’s Matador Red paint, trimmed with standard Red vinyl upholstery and fitted with front bucket seats.
This Camaro has very low miles on a complete restoration which was completed approximately 5 years ago. The car still has a new feel about it, and while not a 100-point show car, it certainly does not disappoint in any way. So, while the restoration is very nice, it was not a ‘Concours’ restoration. There are now some non-factory correct parts like the Holley Sniper EFI, long-tube headers, Flowmaster exhaust and the headlights use a ‘Detroit Speed’ electronic conversion setup. The factory radio was replaced with a new Bluetooth system including JL Audio speakers, amplifier & subwoofer. The factory BV coded 12-bolt 4.10 gearing was replaced with 3.08:1 to make the car run more highway friendly. All of these deviations from stock make it now a much more enjoyable and functional car to drive on the street.
1968 for Camaro is an odd year, as there was no tell-tale signs on the cowl tag to denote either the Rally Sport or Super Sport designations. When this car was restored, the engine was rebuilt and unfortunately during the process the block was decked removing the stampings. What you now have is a rowdy but street friendly cam profile in this engine build.
So, if you are after a beautifully restored and presented car with nice options, then take a good look at this one. It has the looks, sound and the feeling you get when you drive a well sorted Muscle Car down the road. However, if you want a number’s matching original car with a build sheet, then sorry this car is not the one for you.
So, if that sort of thing doesn’t really matter and you’re the type of owner that drives your cars and wants to show them off… in person… at your local club, show or cars and coffee event, then this Camaro is definately the car for you.
